It's that fabulous time of year again where candy and chocolate is everywhere! And let's be honest, it's not just for the children - who doesn't love those mini treats?! Whether you're taking advantage of the bulk boxes and bags of goodies for yourself, or eagerly awaiting your little monster's Halloween slumber so you can pillage through their loot, Vineyard At Home has some fabulous pairing suggestions to enhance your evening. So grab your glass and the bowl of treats, pop in a scary movie, and enjoy!
Woohoo! You survived another Halloween! From picking out a costume to the endless Halloween-themed activities leading up to the day to crossing your fingers that you don't get pranked or egged or TP'd, you deserve to celebrate! Pop open that bottle you've been saving, and enjoy it with some sweet and sour Nerds or the crunchy milk chocolate of a Kit Kat bar. These light treats go well with Sprucewood Shore's Lakeside Sparkling as both have a "bite" to their taste and texture, making them the perfect combination with this bubbly beverage
Sweet, Rich, & Dry Whites
If you're a fan of the bolder, more traditional, more flavourful whites - such as Riesling or Chardonnay - then the more traditional candy is the route to go for you! At the dawn of trick-or-treating, Candy Corn was created. Okay, not really. But this tri-coloured candy does date back to 1880, so if you are a committed Riesling or Chardonnay lover, give it a try with this time tested treat! Equally as aged, a milk chocolate Hershey's bar is the perfect companion to either Frisky Beaver's Ravishing Riesling or Cooper's Hawk Vineyards' Unoaked Chardonnay. A lover of dry whites? The ever popular Pinot Grigio is the perfect match for the staple candies, Skittles and Starburst. These fruity candies pair well with the often neutral but delicious beverage from Cooper's Hawk Vineyards.
Reds: Light, Medium, and Full Bodied
You know what pairs fabulously with wine? Chocolate! Now wine, chocolate, and peanut butter - heaven! Light red wines, such as Sprucewood Shore's Lakeside Red, and Alton Farm's Gamay Noir would be heaven with Reese's Peanut Butter Cups...mmmm...the sweet and savoury combo is already so flavourful that sipping on a big, bold wine would be too much for your palate to enjoy. Balance is key. On the other hand, lighter chocolate treats such as M&M's and Snickers both go well with our medium-fuller bodied reds, like Sprucewood Shore's Cabernet Sauvignon, and Cooper's Hawk Vineyards' Merlot. Note that these are rough guidelines, and in all honesty, chocolate and wine pair well, period!
Whatever you're up to tonight, whether it be trick-or-treating with a little one, shelling out the treats with a big Halloween display, or turning off the porch light early to dig in, make your Halloween a bit classier this year by pairing those bite size treats with some of Ontario's fabulous selection. From Vineyard At Home, we wish you a safe and happy Halloween! Cheers!
